Responsible for:   Daytime catering and occasional evening catering

Location: Union Chapel, North London, N1 2UN

Hours:  Zero hours contract. Typically 18 – 30 hours mainly between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  including Saturday, with occasional evening work.

Salary: £22- £25,000 pa pro rata.

Tenure: 1 year contract with 1 month’s notice.

The Margins Project provides the catering at Union Chapel which is a well-known music venue in Islington. Margins is a charity that works with those experiencing homelessness, crisis or isolation in Islington. We run a winter night shelter welcoming 15 guests off the street and run two weekly drop-ins throughout the year providing food, showers and advice. We also offer support groups such as a job club, English tuition and therapy.

In addition, we run a kitchen training programme offering paid employment to 12 formerly marginalised trainees over the course of the year. Under the tutelage of our Kitchen Supervisor, they prepare and serve the food for the concert goers and daytime hirers at Union Chapel.  After the programme we transition the trainees into further training or employment. The part time chef role would involve working alongside the trainees acting as a good role model.

Margins is seeking a part time qualified chef to help expand our catering business so we can increase our revenue and grow our supported employment programme. The person would primarily be in charge of the catering at our daytime Wednesday and Saturday cafes which sell food to the general public. However, it is envisaged that the person would work on other days when there is a daytime catering request and on occasion get involved in some evening catering for the concerts.

Margins prides itself on offering a varied healthy menu. We only use organic meat and offer vegan options. Our Wednesday and Saturday cafés offer homemade cakes, quiche, wraps and soup. In the evenings we offer a hot meat and vegetarian options with a dessert.

If you are seeking a job that offers an opportunity to not only use your catering skills, but also gives you a chance to create social impact through helping our trainees develop their professional skills then this is the job for you. For a full JD click here.
